A Study of Manufacturing Furfural from Corn Cobs Author: Chyh-Chyun Chou, Pei-Hua Lee(Department of Chemistry College of Sciences)

Abstract:

The hydrolysis of the corn cobs grown in Taiwan to produce furfural by using HCI, H2SO4, and H3PO4 as catalysts was performed.
The corn cob was cut into three parts and then each part was digested with various concentrations of each acid for various period of time. The yield of furfural for each case was obtained. The highest yield was found in the hydrolysis of the bottom part of the corn cob which was digested for two hours, with 5NHCI as catalyst.
