Biological Studies on the Polluted Water of Hsin-tein River Author: T. S. Miu, K. J. Wong, D. M. Hau, S. wu, C. C. Chang, W. C. Chung

Abstract:

This is the first report about the ecological factors and organisms in Hsin-tein River. At Shui-Yuen-ti two localities (St1 & St2) were chosen near the confluence of Hsin-tein River and Wan-shin Stream. St1 is in the Wan-shin Stream. St2 is in the Hsin-tein River. The survey began in April 1967 and ended in September 1967. During these five months we took nine surveys and a continuous 48 hours at 2 hours intervals survey on the 19th and 20th September 1967.
The results of the survey are as follows:
1. The biological oxygen demand (B.O.D.) was 2-7.5 ppm at St1, and O.3-3 ppm at St2. The chemical oxygen demand (C.O.D.) was 5-20 ppm at St1 and 1.2-10 ppm at St2. The Dissolved oxygen (D.O.) was 3.94-12.03 ml/L at St1 and 7.63-12.6 ml/L at St2. The pH value of water was 7-11.5 at St1 and 6.5-7.8at Sr2.
The H2S of water was 0.3-15 ml/L at St1 and O.4-0.6 m/L at St2.
The total hardness of water was 52.2-191.4 mg/L at St1 and 52.2-80.9 mg/L at St2.
The Transparency of water was 2.7-20 cm at St1 and 3.5-25 cm at St2
2. There were 45 species at these two places (St1 & St2). The bacteria counts in the water were 6.600 ~890.000/ ml at St1 and under 160000/ml at St2.
There were some a few algae and diatom specimens at St1 However there were a far greater number of diatoms and conjugatae at St2. The cosmarium sp. was the most numbers. Besides this there were many kinds of animals at both localitiess, St1 & St2. These animals consisted of large numbers of Protozoa, such as Paramecium, Stentor, and a few Limnodrillus sp., Chironomus larva, Rotifera, Crustacea, Amphibia, and fishes etc.
The present results provide direct evidence that the water in the Wan-shin Stream (St1) belongs to the β-polysaprobic zone, and that the watar in Hsin-tain River (St2) belongs to the β mesosaprobic zone.
