Abstract:
3-Cyanopyridine is the intermediate for nicotinamidc and nicotinic acid. Benzonitrile is the intermediate for homosulfamine. A procedure has now been established for the laboratory fluidized-bed ammoxidation of 3-picoline and toluene to form 3-cyanopyridine in 35.2% yield and benzonitrile in 41.5% yield. The effects of reaction temperature, mole ratio of reactants, and amount of catalyst were studied.
